  • Euripos's Greek channelThe Greek island of Evia, as well as its capital, Halkidu, is characterized by an unusual and meaningful phenomenon known as "Crazy Water". This is a very rare (un) natural phenomenon ... that appears in the Evrippos Canal, where seawater flows very quickly like a mountain river.
And for now no one has given any good explanation why something like this is happening with sea water!
The Evriposov Channel is 8 km long and its width varies from 40 meters to 1.6 km.
On the narrowmost part of the canal, there is the administrative center of the island of Evia, the capital of Chalkidis, divided into two parts by channel.
Just at that point, the sea current is so strong (12 knots) to flow like a mountainous fast river, every six hours the current completely changes direction. This phenomenon reaches its peak under an old bridge where the water has a speed of 15 km per hour!
Many say that at this speed, even the shark wrestlers struggle to swim in the opposite direction.
The water flows for six hours in one direction, then it stops for eight minutes, so it continues to run in the other direction for the next six hours and so on.
This is why the Greek city of Chalkidus is also called the City of Crazy Water.
The phenomenon that is happening in the Euripos Canal was fascinated by the ancient Greek thinkers like Plato, who in his part Fedon referred to the Euripos channel as an example of incompetence, as something that constantly changes direction.
Many legends are connected to him, and people do not cease to admire his magnificence, as he constantly springs up his imagination and curiosity.
